It’s not embarrassing enough that I get sick on a boat with the girl I like, but I had to do it right as she was about to kiss me. I feel like the biggest idiot in the world.

“What is it?” Gemma looks at me.

“Can you take us home and we can talk there? I’ll explain everything. I promise.” I look at her for reassurance.

“Okay.” She nods.

She takes the quick way home and before I talk to her, I disappear into the bathroom to brush my teeth and wash my face. Once I feel like myself again, I grab a sleeve of crackers from the kitchen and meet Gemma in the spare room. It sort of makes sense; it’s like our room.

“Are you okay?” Gemma looks up at me from the couch. I take a seat across from her in my usual spot.

“I am, yes. Thank you. I’m sorry about…”

“I’m a nurse. Trust me when I say I’ve seen way worse.” She waves me off.

“Okay, so I know I’ve been sick a lot recently, and I probably should’ve told you sooner, but I didn’t really know how. I’m pregnant.” I wince involuntarily, waiting for the blowback.

Gemma’s eyes look like they’re going to pop back into her head but then she carefully rights herself. I can tell she’s trying to do some sort of doctor math based on my symptoms or wondering what the best way to ask me who the father is.

“Okay, so pregnant. I guess that makes sense given all the morning sickness.” She nods, trying to make sense of it.

“You can ask me anything or I can try to explain, whatever’s easier.”

Gemma hesitates. “Why don’t you explain?”

“Okay.” I nod. I try to figure out where to start.

“So when Finn passed, we were in the process of attempting IVF. He didn’t want anyone to know at first. He was a proud guy, so he asked that we keep it private. I was actually at the doctor when I got the call that he was going to the hospital. We stopped the procedure and put the embryos on ice. I figured I’d wait until he was better, and we’d try again. But obviously that didn’t happen, so I decided that I wanted to be a mom, even if it was going to be on my own. So I used our embryos to get pregnant. I’m about twelve weeks along now. Which is when I can technically tell people, but I’ve been hesitant to given the situation, so only Heather knows,” I explain.

“Wow,” Gemma looks at me with wide eyes.

“Yes.”

I give Gemma a moment to collect her thoughts. I don’t blame her for being surprised. I'm sure the last thing she anticipated was this. Gemma is quiet for a few moments before she speaks.

"I'm so sorry I misread things between us. I never would've tried to kiss you if I didn't think you were interested..." She looks so distraught.

"Please don't apologize."

"No, I'm serious. I should've talked to you first before trying to kiss you.
